Google Analytics certification: exam preparation guide

27 İyul 2026·👁 15 views

Google Analytics Certification is one of the few free certifications in digital marketing that adds real weight to a resume. There's a big difference between certifying and saying “I know GA4,” especially in agency work, freelance projects, and client presentations.

This guide explains how to get a certificate, what topics the exam covers, and the most commonly misunderstood concepts during preparation.

How to get certified: step by step

  1. Sign up with your Google account on the Skillshop platform — the certification course is located here.
  2. Visit the Google Analytics Certification course. The course consists of 5 sections, 26 lessons, and contains approximately 4 hours and 33 minutes of content.
  3. Switch to the four thematic modules (101, 102, 201, 301). These modules are technically marked “optional” — which means you can also take the test directly, but it's not recommended to go unprepared.
  4. Go through the assessment. At the end of each lesson, there are test questions of “Test your knowledge” — they're built with the same logic as the test questions.

The course is available in multiple languages. The certification exam is also given on the same platform and is added to your certification account when you successfully pass.

What skills does the exam test?

According to Google's official description, the following skills are verified when you pass the certificate:

  • Creating Google Analytics 4 properties for the site or app
  • Gather the data you need for your business and operate a variety of reporting tools
  • Understanding the key measurement capabilities that drive the impact of your online marketing activity

Module 1 (101) — Instruction and data collection

This module consists of seven lessons and builds the base. This is where most questions come from.

Topics covered:

  • Digital analytics' relationship with business goals and changing measurement environment
  • GA4's event-based data model
  • Account, property, and data stream structure
  • Setup with Google tag, measurement ID, and Google Tag Manager
  • Enhanced measurement settings
  • Data verification with realtime report and Tag Assistant
  • Admin menu, user roles, and data limitations
  • Dimension and metric definitions

Typical exam questions from this module

Question type: The owner has a website, Android and iOS app. What data streams should customers use when creating their first property to see how they behave across all platforms?

Response logic: One web data stream for the site, and two separate app data streams for apps (one Android, one iOS). Wrong options are usually “one stream for all platforms” or “web stream for applications”.

Question type: How many minutes of activity does the realtime report show?

RE: Last 30 minutes. This is a direct save question on the exam.

Question type: You gave the new user the role of Editor. Does he/she also have the permission of the Analyst role?

RE: Yes. In GA4, each role also has the permissions of roles below itself.

Module 2 (102) — Data management and reporting

It has seven lessons and is the most practical module for everyday work.

  • GA4 interface: Home, Reports, Explore, Advertising, Admin sections
  • Three types of events: automatically collected, recommended, custom
  • Create custom dimension and custom metric, scope option
  • Overview report and detail report difference, report collections
  • Explore: free form, funnel exploration, path exploration
  • Report filter and comparison
  • Cross-domain measurement, unwanted referrals, data filters
  • Conversion and key event insight

Typical exam questions from this module

Question type: You've created a custom event and started sending the new dataset to GA4. Will it appear automatically in your data reports?

RE: No. You'll need to create a custom dimension or custom metric to make new settings appear in reports.

Question type: What allows you to set the IP range to be excluded from your data?

RE: Internal traffic data filter. Among the error variants are cross-domain measurement, unwanted referrals, and developer traffic filter.

Question type: What is used when setting up report filter and comparison rules?

RE: Dimension values. The option “Dimension or metric values” is a trap.

Module 3 (201) — Deep analysis and activation

There are five lessons. After this module, GA4 becomes a decision tool from the reporting tool.

  • Setting up key events and using them in reports
  • Additional application steps of e-commerce events
  • Generate custom report (max 150 per property)
  • Connecting with Google Ads and its benefits
  • Advertising section, attribution models, and roas
  • Segment and audience difference, segment overlap, predictive audience

Typical exam questions from this module

Question type: Which description belongs to the segment and which audience?

Response logic: Segment — Data subroutine that allows you to analyze user groups, sessions, or events for features you've set in Explore. Audience — a user group you set in GA4 that you share with Google Ads and/or Google Marketing Platform.

Question type: What are two ways to create a custom report in GA4?

RE: Edit existing reports and create a new report from scratch.

Question type: What's in the Advertising section?

RE: Paid marketing conversions, attribution data, and reports focusing on ad/publisher performance.

Module 4 (301) — Integration and scalability

It has five lessons and is the most technical module.

  • Data adjustment with modify event and create event
  • Sending server and offline data with Measurement Protocol
  • Merging CRM/CMS data with data import (CSV)
  • Privacy: data retention, consent mode, IP addresses, data deletion request
  • BigQuery Export: daily and streaming modes, location selection
  • Analytics 360: subproperty and roll-up property
  • Google Ads, Display & Video 360, Search Ads 360 integrations

Typical exam questions from this module

Question type: What is the standard set of rules that enables you to collect events and send them directly to Google Analytics servers?

RE: Measurement Protocol.

Question type: When exporting data from GA4 to BigQuery, can you choose the geographic location of the storage?

RE: Yes — this is set during the BigQuery Export configuration.

Question type: What parameter sets the retention time of the user and event level dataset?

RE: Data retention. Invalid options: consent mode, IP address settings, data collection shutdown.

The Seven Most Misguided Insights

  1. Segment vs audience — segment for analysis (in Explore), audience targeting (shared in Google Ads).
  2. Report filter vs data filter — the report filter only affects visibility and can be undone; the data filter does not release the dataset GA4 at all and is permanent.
  3. Key event vs conversion — Key event in GA4, conversion when shared with Google Ads.
  4. Path exploration vs funnel — funnel pre-determined single path, path exploration shows all the real paths.
  5. Custom metric scope — custom metric can only be event-scoped; user and item scope are for dimension only.
  6. Measurement Protocol vs. data import — first with HTTP in real time, second with bulk CSV upload.
  7. Subproperty vs. roll-up property — subproperty shrinks the dataset, the roll-up connects several properties.

Numbers to keep in mind

There are also direct memorization questions in the exam. The following numbers are clearly highlighted in lessons and often turn into questions.

  • 30 minutes — Duration of activity indicated by the realtime report.
  • 24 hours — Waiting time for the dataset to be processed after GA4 is first set up; as well as the amount of time it takes for the Google Ads dataset to appear in GA4.
  • 30 Days — the backward data period used when filling the audience.
  • 7 days — the waiting period during which the data deletion request can be cancelled.
  • 72 hours — duration of extraction of single user dataset from the report.
  • 35 days — the length of time the removed property stays in the trash.
  • 7 collections — the maximum collection of reports in a property.
  • 150 custom reports — the maximum number of custom reports in a property.
  • 4 hrs 33 mins — the total content period of the certification course.

Seven-day prep plan

  1. Day 1–2: Go to Module 101 and set up a test property on your own site in parallel. Seeing theory in practice doubles the memory.
  2. Day 3: Navigate to Module 102. Navigate through reports in Google's demo account (Google Merchandise Store).
  3. Day 4: Build a funnel and a pathway exploration in Explore. Apply a report filter and a comparison.
  4. Day 5: Navigate to module 201. Set up a key event and view its column in the Traffic acquisition report.
  5. Day 6: Switch to module 301. Repeat the terms (Measurement Protocol, data retention, roll-up) as a list.
  6. Day 7: Resolve the verification questions at the end of all lessons, then retake the test.

Practice advice: Get access to Google's demo account. Walking on real data is much more effective than theoretical reading and helps directly in preparation for scenario type questions in the exam.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is the certificate bootable?

No, Google Analytics Certification is free. All you need to do is register with a Google account on the Skillshop platform.

How long does the test take and how many times can I try?

The total course content is approximately 4 hours and 33 minutes. There is a limited number of attempts (2 attempts at some questions) in the test questions inside the lesson. If you fail the test, you can try again after a certain waiting period.

Is the certificate expired?

Google certificates usually need to be updated after a certain time. Because the GA4 platform changes frequently, updating a certificate is also a way to keep knowledge up to date.

Can it be tested directly without going through the modules?

Technically yes — modules are marked “optional”. But exam questions are built directly from lesson content, so entering unprepared is a risk.

Does a certificate help you get a job?

It does not guarantee work alone, but in digital marketing vacancies, GA4 knowledge is a standard requirement. An example of working on a certificate + real property makes a strong impact together.

Results

Google Analytics certification is not a day's work, but it can be realistically achieved with a week's planned preparation. The most effective way is to parallel theory to practice: after reading each module, repeat that action on your own property or in a demo account.

After the test, the real work begins — the certificate confirms the knowledge, and the value is generated when you convert that knowledge into a specific business decision.
